Australian Salmon on the Fly

Edward went out at sunrise on Port Phillip bay with Michael Levett. It was an exciting morning's fishing, with various species caught. This was one of two Australian salmon Edward caught while fly fishing. We also caught several King George whiting, garfish, 'pinky' snapper and a flathead, using pippies as bait.

Turbot Time

William and Edward float fished sandeels. Edward caught two bass of just under 3lb. William caught one small bass and this turbot. All fish were returned.

More & More Bass

This is turning out to be one of the best bass fishing years we have ever had. The float fished sandeel has accounted for large numbers of fish from various locations at different stages of the tide and in different weather conditions. Edward is wondering whether he will ever use his beach caster again. We are puzzled as to why the fish seem so much more inclined to take baits presented mid water rather than on the bottom. The average size has been around 4lbs. a few of which have been kept and many returned.

New Method Big Success

After a long period of calm settled weather it was decided to change tactics. Fishing a sand eel beneath a bubble float proved to be a killer method. Edward hooked and landed two nice bass weighing 4.5lbs and 6lbs and William caught a pb. bass weighing 7lbs 8oz's.

First Fish in 2009 for William

William and Edward took the Desmon out for the years first fishing trip. William caught a pike weighing 5lbs.

Edward Lures Ling

On Saturday, William and Edward headed out for a couple of hours of shadding from the Orkney near Galley Head. Edward caught loads of decently sized pollack and a ling of perhaps 12lb. William couldn't settle on a fishing method and faffed about a lot, but did lose a decent fish on a joey mackerel. All Edward's fish were caught on an orange shad. We went back there the next day and caught very little of any value, just a few small pollack. The wind had veered around to the North-East at that stage, so we reckoned that this may have had some effect.

William hits the bass jackpot

William sneaked off for a few casts on his way to work. It was an overcast morning with a lovely ripple on the water. He broke a rapala out of its box, Robin had given it to him for his birthday a few years back and it was being saved for a special occasion. On his second cast he struck into a bass of 3lbs which he returned, soon after he landed a 4 pounder and then a 6 pounder which put up a mighty struggle and buried itself in the kelp. Having recovered from that, for good measure another 3 pounder was landed which was also returned. With a big grin he stopped fishing, it doesn't get much better than that, a personal best lure caught bass. What a mornings fishing!

Nice Bass for William, Spectacular fall for Edward

It was obviously a good day for bass fishing, the conditions looked perfect. It wasn't long before we started getting bites and Edward caught three fish in quick succession, all around 2.75lbs. While returning from a bait change to a rather precarious rock from which he had been fishing Edward fell in. Luckily suffering only superficial injuries he was more concerned about his rod and reel than the stream of blood running down his arm. William caught a 5lb bass.

Tiny Turbot Triumph

Rona's brother Doug, William and Rona spent several hours on various beaches and out in the boat on a mission to get Doug to catch a decent sized fish. The highlight of our efforts was this double hook up of tiny turbots. A first for both anglers.

Guilty Rona

On a very wet and windy weekend William and Edward managed to gather some peeler crabs. Both Saturday and Sunday were spent being blasted by wind and rain on the beach with not a fish to be seen. Rona turned up towards the end of the Sunday session and decided to have a cast. Typically she almost immediately hooked and landed a gilthead bream weighing 2.5lbs.

Ray Day

William and Rona went out in the boat for the afternoon. Rona caught a a dogfish, a whiting and a dab. William caught several dabs, two grey gurnards, two small plaice and a spotted ray weighing 3lbs.

Gilthead for John

 

John and Edward went and tried for a gilthead for an hour or so. John was rewarded with this beautiful gilthead of about 2.25lb. Exciting fight on very light tackle.

Mega Mullet

William and Edward had some success fishing for mullet on small chunks of mackerel. Edward caught a 5.25lb fish and William had a 2.75lb fish. Great fight from the big one on the fly rod.
